Peer education
Since 1999 peer-education approach was integrated into all sexual health education trainings organised by NGO Living for Tomorrow.
During 1999-2012 we conducted total of 39 trainings in different towns of Estonia (Tallinn, Narva, Viljandi, Võhma, Rapla, Rakvere, Väike-Maarja, Paide, Tartu, Pärnu, Haapsalu) both in Estonian and Russian language. In total around 660 people attended our trainings.
On average training brought together 18 people, this allowed group leader to establish personal connection with every participant. Our aim is encouraging participants to develop critical thinking, analyze everything that is linked to human sexuality and sexual behaviour.
Upon completing the training many participants became trustees of their communities (friends, school, county), able to provide both information and advice. Many of them organised different events promoting healthy life style and safer sexual behaviour, preventing HIV/AIDS, STIs and drug addiction.
Best Practice Program by UNAIDS
In 2003 Living for Tomorrow peer-education project was awarded Best Practice by UNAIDS: „Living for Tomorrow research and action project was named as one of two best practice projects by the UNAIDS in a report going to the UN General Assembly in 2003. The project was complimented for its gender-focused approach, for getting young people to critically reflect on their assumptions about gender-appropriate sexual behaviours and their consequences for young women and young men; for developing an understanding of the importance of gender in relation to HIV/AIDS among young people and for making the young people understand the importance of their efforts in helping to stem the spread of HIV among young people.“
